YHS-Egypt (YHS-EGY)

Background & Motivation

Egypt hosts unique and diverse hydrological systems. It is home to the world’s longest river, the Nile, and shares the vast Nubian Sandstone Aquifer, one of the largest fossil groundwater reserves on Earth. At the same time, Egypt faces an arid to semi-arid changing climate, ongoing transboundary water disputes, and critically low per capita water availability, well below the international water security threshold. Egypt is also bounded from the north and east by two vast semi-enclosed basins, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, where climate change and sea level rise are expected to play an increasing role in shaping the hydrological cycle and aggravating water-related challenges. Together, these factors make water resources management in Egypt particularly complex and urgent.

Amid these pressures, Egypt has a growing and vibrant community of young hydrologists: talented, highly educated, motivated, and well-versed in contemporary water challenges at national and global scales. Yet, the lack of a dedicated platform for networking and exchange has limited opportunities for collaboration, visibility, and international engagement.

Mission

The Young Hydrologic Society – Egypt Chapter (YHS-EG) has established to bridge this gap. Our mission is to:

  • Provide a platform for early- and mid-career hydrologists to connect and collaborate.
  • Foster knowledge exchange, critical thinking, and scientific dialogue on pressing water issues.
  • Organize events and initiatives that strengthen links between Egyptian water researchers/ specialists and the global hydrological community.
  • Enhance the visibility, recognition, and impact of young Egyptian hydrologists.

Through YHS-EG, Egypt’s young water scientists can extend their impact beyond geographic and institutional boundaries, contributing to both national priorities and global hydroscience.

Objectives & Activities

To achieve this mission, YHS-EG will:

  • Support the integration of young hydrologists into international research initiatives, workshops, and networking events to enhance visibility and participation in the global scientific community.
  • Build independent research teams that leverage local expertise and collaborate with universities and research institutions in Egypt and abroad (as for now, in the EU and Canada).
  • Provide mentoring, training, and professional development opportunities to strengthen the skills of early-career hydrologists.
  • Encourage members to explore emerging technologies and startups in water solutions, fostering innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.
