Benefits of BHS membership

There are a number of benefits to young hydrologists of membership of BHS, these include:

  • BHS Student Award, awarded for the best undergraduate dissertation(s) in hydrology submitted by university departments:
    • Prizes include £400 for the winner and £200 for two runners up
    • Students must be entered by their supervising lecturer, who must be on the staff of a UK university

  • Studentship Scheme, for the support of potential MSc/MRes students to develop their academic expertise in hydrology at UK Higher Education Institutes:
    • Alongside the JBA Trust, BHS provides studentships of ~£1000

  • Travel Grants, to support BHS members attendance at national and international scientific meetings:
    • Priority given to members aged under 35
    • Applicants must have been members of BHS for at least 6 months, and should apply at least two months in advance of the conference
    • Successful applicants are required to write a short report on their visit for publication in the BHS quarterly newsletter, Circulation

  • Exeter Fund, to support young hydrologists’ attendance at IAHS events, or those of its parent body, the IUGG:
    • Members must be resident in the UK

  • Annual Peter Wolf Early Career Hydrologists’ Symposium, an opportunity for early career hydrologists’, from both academia and industry, to present their work
    • Two-day event includes oral and poster sessions, keynote speakers, and conference dinner
    • Includes Yong Persons’ Prize for best oral and poster presentations
    • Open to undergraduates, taught postgraduates, postgraduate researchers, post-docs, and young hydrologists’ in industry
  • In addition BHS hosts a number of conferences and meetings every year, which can be viewed in the BHS Meeting Calendar

 Joining BHS

Annual BHS membership subscription is £30, with concessions available for full-time students and under-25s (currently £15).  1st years membership is free for students and those aged under-25, if you sign up to pay future fees by direct debit.
